+the fisherman's daughter

A long time ago, a fisherman's daughter fell in love with a mermaid. Ever evening when they parted, the mermaid would ask the girl, "Will you let me love you forever?" But the girl knew the stories of mermaids as well as any sailor, and every time she said, "I'll have an answer next time." Finally the day came that the girl's father told her he had arranged for her to be married to a rich old man who lived in a city far from the sea. On the night before she was to be sent away, the fisherman’s daughter stood at the docks in her wedding dress and called out, "My love, I have my answer now. I'll let you love me forever."

So the mermaid came, and took her love into the sea.
